> Why work with variations ?
_ It’s a method I use to discover new possibilities in the same way musicians do: I decide on a theme, here the metal plate, there tensed sails, and I enjoy myself.
Contrary to what I usually do, which is have everything prepared in advance, I discover new things and evolve as I go along. That way, I don’t necessarily end up where I had expected to.

> 何故バリエーションの仕事をしているのですか ?
_ 音楽家のように新しい可能性を発見する為に使う一つの方法です。テーマを決め、例えば一枚の板材とか、張られた帆をイメージするとか、楽しみながら制作します。全ての事を前もってデッサンする代わりに、制作しながら徐々に発見し発展してゆきます。もちろん必ずしも最初にやりたいと思った所にたどり着く事ばかりではなく、予想外のものにも出会います。

> Pourquoi travailler par variations ?
_ C’est une méthode que j’utilise pour découvrir de nouvelles possibilités, comme les musiciens, je fixe un thème, ici la plaque, les voiles tendues et je prends du plaisir.
Contrairement à ma méthode habituelle très préparée, je découvre et j’évolue graduellement en travaillant. Je n’arrive pas forcément à ce que j’avais souhaité au départ, je rencontre l’inattendu.

_ I wanted to try bronze. What I love in this work, is that I manage the first part; I do researches with clay then I cast with plaster. Then the bronze founder engages the hot process then chiselling, patina. Sometimes, you get good surprises. I love doing bronze work, but I don’t do it much because of the cost.

_ 私はブロンズのテクニックを試したいと思いました。この仕事で気にいってるのは、自分が最初の部分の制作、つまり粘土、石膏の仕事をすることです。後は鋳物屋が型取り、磨き、着色をして仕上げます。良い意味での思いがけない結果が生まれることもあります。ブロンズのこのテクニックが好きですが、費用がかかる為あまり多くはやりません。

_ Je voulais appréhender la technique du bronze. Je m’occupe de la première partie du travail: terre et plâtre; après c’est le fondeur qui s’occupe de la fonte, la ciselure, la patine et cela produit parfois de bonnes surprises. J’aime cette méthode, mais j’en fais peu en raison du prix.

> How do you cope with the flow of ideas ?
_ I follow my desires, I navigate. This is also why I often change material.
I always have something on my mind, here I mostly wanted to play.

> どうやって豊富に出てくるアイデアを整理するのですか ?
_ 私は、自分の欲求に耳を傾け、それを探ります。これは、私がしばしば素材やテクニックを変える理由です。何時も何かを表現したい気持に駆られています。これらの作品は遊びの気持から発しています。

> Comment gères-tu le foisonnement d’idées ?
_ Je suis mes envies, je navigue. C’est pour cela que je varie les techniques. J’ai toujours envie d’exprimer quelque chose. Là, j’avais surtout envie de jouer.

 

> Are you a carver in stone ?
_ I refuse to feel myself limited, to stick to one material or domain. When I did this sculpted painting, I was in a phase when I considered that my sculptures weren’t colourful enough.. Here I used plywood which I cut, painted, assembled. It was entirely new for me.

> あなたは石工ですか ?
_ いいえ、私は、一つの素材や、ある分野に制限され縛られてしまう事がいやなんです。この絵画彫刻を制作したとき、自分の彫刻に色彩が欠けていると思いました。 ここではベニア板を、切断し、構成して、着色して制作しました。これらの仕事は私にとって全く新しい領域でした。

> Es-tu un tailleur de pierre ?
_ Je ne veux pas me sentir limité, coincé dans un matériau ou dans un domaine. Quand j’ai fait ce tableau sculpté, j’étais dans un moment où je trouvais que ma sculpture manquait de couleurs. Ici, j’ai utilisé du contreplaqué découpé, peint et assemblé; pour moi c’était un domaine complètement nouveau.
