Foreword of Tetsuo Harada,
Paris, July 12th 2005

I arrived in France more than thirty years ago, in 1973.
After a long experience in sculpture, I think the time has come for me to stand back and take a fresh look on the work achieved.
The more I work, the more I feel I need to deepen my thinking and at the same time, the more I doubt.
I did not try to make new things, I did not want to follow the new trends. I tried to be honest with myself… There is so much hypocrisy and pretences in our world.
Through selfishness, man is destroying earth and his culture. Every thing that has a shape will disappear one day or another, but the destruction of the environment or of the Buddha’s in Afghanistan is a sign of the madness of our era. Money and extremism of all sorts warps the deeper identity of humankind. Economy and trade are increasingly dominant to the detriment of life, feelings, exchange, and art. The artist doesn't play the part he deserves in this world.
I, myself, am just a very small being among others with a fleeting existence, but I'm convinced that we have to explore relentlessly, but humbly, the passion inside us.
I've worked a lot sculpting, drawing, painting for my pleasure, for my family and a bit for money. Today I'm a satisfied man, I have a beautiful family, friends, a beautiful studio and good health. More than this, if I succeed in transmitting a message, my life and work wouldn't have been useless. Expressing myself with sculpture is not easy but I deeply feel the need. I think it's the reason of my existence.
In my life, I was very lucky, I met people that helped me to obtain my studio, to do shows, who made me feel as an artist sculptor. I taught art to future architects who, as a reward, gave back a lot. This book is a way for me to thank all those who helped me be the person I am today. Some will read those lines, some are already gone. To all, I express my deep gratitude.

Foreword by Ce´sar Minoru Harada
Paris, August 25th 2005

This book is born after a lifetime immersion in the work of my father and a long coming of age.
We tried to make a book which was intimate and alive, direct and simple.
This work tries to cope with several requirements: be an autonomous piece of art, be a retrospective work as well as a study guide. The first part is a cinematic travel in the shapes of Tetsuo Harada. The second part is a dialogue with the artist. Finally, you will find a biography. You will also notice that the book does not really end, they are recent sketches and white pages.
The work of Tetsuo Harada is generous. Making this book was a great joy and I am happy to share with you what is part of my inheritance.

-p8
X How did it all start ?

_ The beginning of my story is my soul. I was born after the war in a shaken and trembling country, where the presence of nature is very important. The city of Niigata (ex. Niitsu) is very beautiful. I love the nature of my country between the sea and the mountain. I am the last son of a blacksmith that became a small industrialist in metallic structures. My family, despite the difficulties of living at the time, protected me very well. I had a very happy and balanced life in the countryside.

----------------------------

-p10

X You started practicing sculpture with figurative works.

I started my studies at the fine art school of Tamabi, Tokyo, so I started from the beginning, figuration, the human body. I studied with professors Entsuba, Tatehata, Tsutchitani; I learnt observing masters such as Brancusi, Noguchi, Moore… Then I continued my studies at the “Beaux-Arts” school of Art in Paris.

X We can identify subjects in your early sculptures, so choosing abstraction as a language can appear strange, suggesting a shape and getting away from it?

__Not at all, there are in nature so many informal or stealthy manifestations like water, mineral, clouds, air …
I have very formal and very informal inspirations. Evocation is a fundamental principle, it is supposed to give more freedom to the creation and to the public.

X you always claimed to be inspired by nature. Is nature the objective or the origin of your work?
_Nature exists, it is the starting point, it delivers a universal message. Being a sculptor, I have a lot of pleasure expressing an idea, when I sculpt, my thinking goes into the shape, and this shape bears witness of an intent. I want to be simple and accessible, produce a shape in harmony with nature.

--------------------

-p13

-p13
X How did you switch from figuration to abstraction?

_ There was a sliding evolution, for example figurative elements undergo deformation like my "oiseau" which is a bird deformation, a fish that become a scale, matches that soften and evoke something else… While deforming, I always had a feeling I was getting closer to the world of my dreams. Shapes have always interested me.

-----------------------
-p14

-p14
X When you began sculpture did you try to dominate the material or did you let the material guide you?
_ I always sketch before I start carving. I consider what material I should use from my sketches, I have to find the appropriate material to satisfy the shape I have in mind.
Then when I start working, there is a dialogue between me and the object: the object talks to me, I talk to the object. It is a battle that is also a quest for harmony. I can understand the stone because I can feel myself being a stone, we are equals, we can really communicate. Sometimes it's works well, but sometimes I have to change material.

X Is it because you are looking for the limits of the material?
_No, I aim for an understanding with the material. The material is powerful in itself. When the dialogue between the material and I is interesting, then the artwork is generally successful.

X Is it the result of a happy coincidence ?
_ There can be a part of luck, but, with time I get better, and with the technique and experience, I come closer to making shape and idea correspond.

X What are the conditions or the state of mind that is required for you to create? Is your art meditative or is it outlet of your feelings?
-I am very sensitive to my surrounding, if the weather is nice, if I'm feeling happy, tormented, if I hear some music, if I'm angry… there are different moods for different creations. Most of the time my work is the expression of my inner self.

X Your stimulation to produce didn't seem to change, may be your personality changed?
_ Yes, I have changed, the entire society has changed, my working conditions have changed and I can work serenely now, I have more possibilities, I have everything I need to create, the only thing I lack is the time to do everything I want.

X Where does the value of the artwork reside for you, in the process of creation, or in the finished object?
_ Conception and creating are my favourite moments. Usually I have a heavy period of preparation with sketches and models. A shape that starts to come out of a block of granite, marble or wood produces an exquisite pleasure. My thoughts flow through the sculpture. Once the artwork is finished, it will live its own autonomous life in space.

--------------------------

-p17

-p17

X We can feel in some of your sculptures a research for movement freedom, the expression of the unexpected.
_ I want to be free, sometimes the material is sufficient to express freedom, I often hesitate before I start carving because of the natural beauty of the material. But I am a sculptor and I must transmit my thoughts through the shape.

--------------------

-p18

-p18

X You did not exhibit this sculpture much, do you want of keep it?
_ This piece is very important in the context of the beginning of my life in Europe in 1973. I had just arrived from Japan. I wanted to show the beauty of marble. Here is the story of one of my first sculpture in Italy: I found this little bloc of balderio in Italy, near the city of Carrara. It is grey marble with a perforator hole in the middle; I wanted to use the hole to give strength to the shape. I was trying to sculpt a movement, strength, wind.

X Would you be able to find the energy to make this kind of piece a second time?
_I never make the same sculpture twice. This block had a hole beforehand, it was in a pile of rubble . To find the same marble, with the same hole would be impossible. This work is unique. I think it is very important to create on the spur of the moment. If I do this type of work again, I will probably give very different movements and end up with a totally different sculpture.

------------------------

-p21

-p21
X What are the links between your imaginary world and the real world?
_ My sculpture exists. My imagination and the imagination of the material join in the realization of a project which is open on the real world. I try to transmit the strength I felt and, with the shape appearing in my hands, one must go further, beyond the original project. My sculpture is a travel in my imagination, I hope it can help others to travel in their own imagination.

X Do you try to overcome the state of nature by artistic creation?
_ I never wanted to overcome the state of nature. In nature, you find an infinity of shapes that influence me and feed my imagination.
_ I started with a sensible interpretation of what I was seeing and I wanted to free the restricted figurative spirit to lead it in the direction of infinite imagination. I also represented symbolic objects like the word "balance" which is an object but also an idea of equilibrium or disequilibrium, for me it's easier to express this with an abstract shape.

---------------------

-p27

-p27
X We can identify a period of your life during which you produced a lot of knots. From a personal point of view, what feeling were you trying to express?
_ The knot is a very interesting shape. Since I was at Tama University in Japan, I told myself that I wanted to be an artist. I lived a long period of reflection and research, not knowing what exactly I wanted to express. The knot represents this difficult question.
I wanted to produce and at the same time I did not have a real need to create; now I have an enormous desire for creation and a real need, it has become my normal way of considering things.

----------------------

>Certaine de tes sculptures semblent he´sitantes.
Je me sens beaucoup mieux. Donc tout cela a` e´te´ be´ne´fique pour moi

-p40

X Some of your sculpture seem to hesitate, between different shapes and materials, as if they were hybrid forms. What was the importance of such works in your personal development?
_ Like for the knot, I needed to move beyond my hesitations, I was doing research in different shapes, materials, mixing, doing hybridizations, working on recovery techniques, modifying my ideas, transforming other researches, it was a delicate moment.

X During these periods of doubt, you did a lot of experimental work, took risks it was very beneficial for you. What about today?
_ I think that a man can always be caught up in doubt, it's a very good engine for progress. I had to move across those complicated moments that were decisive, it wasn’t easy and I didn’t get where I am today in a straight unencumbered line. I do still take risks. But I have mostly decided to search for pleasure in my work. I feel much more comfortable today, but all that was very beneficial to me..

--------------------

-p41

-p41

X I allowed myself to mix several shapes that appeared to me to be components for a single hybrid shape.

_ Sometimes my work looks progressive and composed of hybridations, in the previous page that was the case, but not in this page. From the beginning I had the clear idea to compose the vertical and horizontal space, horizontal fluid and vertical solid.

-------------------------

-p47

-p47

X your vocabulary of shapes looks quite classifiable, have you ever ordered them in a lexicon, or syntax of combinations?

_ I have never classified my shapes but I think that some formal rules established themselves naturally in my mind.

--------------------------

-p54

-p54

X Some pieces still seem hybrid but we can see they are more under control, balanced…

_ They can be hybrid, as long as the idea is clear from the beginning, you can get your message across. What is most important is working on an idea. Before, I wasn’t as clear in my goals, I used to jump in the void, discovering the shape as I went along.

X When we were talking about the knot as metaphors of your inner questioning, it appeared that this problematic is open: different parts of the knot move deliberately with different textures and expressions, allowing the audience to identify two parts, two characters. Does your abstract sculpture turn into something narrative?

_ The public sees the sculpture, he sees the knot, he has a lot of freedom to interpret, some will see two human bodies intertwining, other intestines, other abstract shapes. When I work, I feel this sensuality in space, there is a sense of expectation in the air. The knot was a preparation before this liberation, this discovery of secret interactions between shapes.

-p60

-p60

X Your sculptures that used to talk gently about relations seems to gain in confidence and sensual delight. Is your work decent?

_ Sometimes I clearly affirm sensuality, sometimes I only prefer to suggest it. Sometimes I dare to show it, but I would not admit that I do. Sometimes people see it, those that can travel in their imaginations, there are many different kinds of audience.
When two elements try to get closer or get away from each other, two gentle or aggressive shapes, there emerges a message from their position, their orientation. I like to lay out motionless elements, and the audience can imagine motion and a story from these positions, the relation between the shapes. Each person is free to go as far as they want into their imagination. Through abstraction, I seek to reach a certain realism in the feeling experienced.

----------------------------

-p65

-p65

X Here is a kiss. Did you sketch a couple from life?
_ No, I directly schematize, I sketche the shape that is going through my mind.

X The shape is graphic and then volume?
_ My sketch expresses a volume straight away, I'm thinking sculpture.

---------------------------

-p69

-p69

X We can often identify two characters, so we easily make associations such as: feminine-organic-curves and masculine-mineral-geometric. Is it a conventional code to represent extremes?
_ Not necessarily, I don't try to oppose masculine and feminine, my research is much wider, more abstract, it's about vegetal and mineral, rigid and flexible. I look for contrast and balance, how two different shapes can create a harmony.

--------------------

-p70

>Apre`s tes e´tudes, tu as continue´ a` explorer divers mate´riaux.

-p70

X After your studies you kept on exploring materials, why?

During my studies I thought I had to familiarise myself with all techniques. I started with modelling, plaster cast, carving wood, stone, resin, metal, clay…
Now, like for food, I need to eat different things to feel good. Moving from a material to another gives me the opportunity to stand back from a material and come back to it with new experiences, new desires for different shapes. Each material has its own requirements and language. I enrich my formal vocabulary with these experiences making me evolve progressively and giving me an expanding freedom of expression.

---------------------------------

-p82

-p82

X You sometimes approach sexual representation in a very affirmative way, is there a will to shock, elicit a strong reaction?

_ Sexuality is part of life, there is no provocation on my part. I do things as I feel them and the audience is free to find it shocking or pleasant and natural.

X Do you have a cultural approach of sexuality in your work?

_ Representation of sex in my work has nothing to do with obsession. On earth males and females coexist, their complementarity being an essential condition to life. Sexuality is a universal subject that cannot be made to fit into a particular cultural slot. It is not primitive, nor modern, nor occidental, nor oriental. I just hope people can receive my message simply.

-------------------------

-p85

-p85

X You represented passion, you live, you can see it. On the other hand you can't see fecundation the way you represent it using the spermatozoid as a character. It's quite a photo-reportage-fantastic!
_ Sculpture does not move, I have to enshrine and transmit this fleeting instant. Fecundation is a decisive moment, crystallising the idea of fertility.

X You represent here the action of fecundation with simple, almost neutral shapes.
_ Everything is not related to the human body, here it is only something material, a landscape, a geological movement. It is something delicately put on something soft, polished, that distorts itself.

-p90

p90

X A part of your work of sculpture is frontal and graphic. Can we definite those sculpture by the word "texture"?
_ You can't limit my work to just texture. The vibration of the material makes the sculpture alive and ready for my hands and the hands of the public. I love to do this surface work, rich in contrasts: raw, polished, pricked, and flamed…

X In your work there are horizontal texture that we dare touch and some vertical that we don’t, why?
_ People are invited to touch!
When it is on the grounds we can walk on it, its position is an authorisation in itself.
When it is vertical, you really have to make an effort to go towards the sculpture. Sometimes it must also be a matter of the density of information available.

X I am surprised, you have a very naturalistic explanation, I expected a more cultural or educational answer: a work presented vertically looks like a canvas or calligraphy, you can't touch it, it's even forbidden.
That is probably the reaction of an audience that is locked up in a certain mindset.

Do you sculpt with your eyes closed?
_ Yes, sculpture is a question of volume, I look a lot with my hands, although is can get a little risky when using a hammer!

----------------

-p94

-p94

X As we talked about your vocabulary of shapes, is it possible to talk about writing, of a graphic language in your bas-relief?
_ It is not possible to do a sculpture instantly in one stroke. Sculpting a stone is long. On the other hand a sketch can be done in a hand stroke. A bas-relief is a more graphic approach of sculpture, quite similar to a painting.

-------------------

-p92

-p92

Sculpture is a powerful means of communicating that speaks directly to the body. One can hold it in ones’ hands, touch it, climb on it, one can be inside it ; there is a dialogue with the whole body and senses, the visitor lives within the sculpture. I like when the children play with my sculptures, they have no inhibitions, they just enjoy the volumes.

------------

-p97

-p97

X Does sculpture have a psychoanalytic role for you?
_ Sculpture can be a medicine to solve problems, for me and for others. I wish my sculpture to have therapeutic properties, it is a very straightforward and physical sculpture. For example, I have represented birth, maternity, the contact with the mother; even as you get older, you cannot forget those privileged moments. I feel a strong need to show these instants of childhood, which are past, but never forgotten.

------------------

-p100

-p100

X Why work with variations ?
_ It's a method I use to discover new possibilities like musicians do : I decide on a theme, here the metal plate, there tensed sails, and I enjoy myself.
Contrary to what I usually do, which is have everything prepared in advance, I discover new things and evolve as I go along. That way, I don’t necessarily end up where I had expected to.

-----------------

-p102

-p102

_ I wanted to try bronze. What I love in this work is that I take care of the first part, research with clay then casting plaster; after it is the bronze founder that takes care of the chiselling, patina and sometimes you get good surprises. I love doing bronze work, but I don’t do it much because of the cost.

----------------------

-p105

J’ai toujours envie d’exprimer quelque chose. La`, j’avais surtout envie de jouer.

-p105

W How do you cope with the flow of ideas?
_ I follow my desires, I navigate. This is also why I often change material. I always have something on my mind, here I mostly wanted to play.

--------------------

-p109

-p109

W Are you carver in stone ?
_ I refuse to feel myself limited, stick to one material or domain. When I did this sculpted painting, I was in a phase when I considered that my sculptures weren’t colourful enough.. Here I used plywood that I cut, painted, assembled. It was entirely new for me.

I have a problem with some of your sculptures : I am peacefully taking a walk and suddenly, it is the raw edge of the sculpture and I fall back into the real world without transition.
_ In my imagination the landscape does continue, often what I present is only a fragment of what I imagine. I think that even if I end the sculpture in a abrupt way, the public is able to feel his own space penetrated by my sculpture.

----------------------

-p120

-p120

W When you think about earth, do you imagine something threatening or something reassuring ?
_ When I was in high school in Japan, I felt a magnitude 5 earthquake. When you feel this, you really feel the presence of the earth beneath your feet. You can't see it but everyday in Japan, the earth is moving and it is this powerful link I have with the earth that I want to transmit in my sculptures.

W Your sculpture are a homage to nature. What are your spirituals sources?
_ Man isn’t very much in nature. Earth is powerful but fragile. We torture it, pumping its resources. I feel I have to protect it. My spiritual strength comes from the earth, the sky; just as plants do, we live with the earth, the sun the water, the air. We breath the sky and we drink water … Nature is the basis of everything.

-------------------------

-p156

-p156

W Why are you so interested in showing power?
_ In power there is fragility and vice-versa. My materials are very sensitive: powerful and delicate.

---------------------------

-p161

-p161

W Virility is a thematic that is important for you?
_ Ah, because you see something that is erect ?

W Yes, this shape is very affirmative
_ There are several ways of looking at it, for me it's mostly the womb of a pregnant mother, strength from the inside.

-----------------------

-p162

Less is more.

-p162

W With time your sculpture gets increasingly simple and refined.
_ To strongly express an idea, I do not need a complicated shape. With a complicated shape the audience will endlessly question the shape and find no answer. I want to take off what is useless, simplify. With simplicity you can say much more. "Less is more".

X Are you not afraid to end doing impersonal work?
_ All the shapes I think I am creating have already been explored by other artists or exist in nature. I admire minimalist yet sensible pieces such as Constantin Brancusi's 《commencement du monde》, Barbara Hepworth 's 《discs in echelon》, some shapes are eternally new.

X For you, is simplification just a means or a goal in itself?
_ It's a way for me to express my ideas, I do not want to be a "minimal artist" which I am not.

X So is it important that people be able to recognize your signature, your style ?
_ I don't ask myself the question when I create, I do the sculpture as I feel it, I am not looking for a style but I have an identity. I live in the present moment.

W Are you following the tendency ?
_ I'm not running after fashion, I try to be myself. If what I do is fashionable or not is an entire different issue altogether.

-------------------------

-p164

-p164

W In your notebooks, I found some photos of landscapes, close-ups on materials.
_ I was doing research about landscapes, I was interested by landscapes which were volcanic, moonlike, imaginary, mineral, deserted, by forests, fields, the sea, disintegration … everything has an energy, I am very inspired by young mountain ranges for example.

X Why do you live in Beauce now? It is so flat?
_ Now I love this flat calm landscape. I was born between the mountain and the sea, now I live in a sea of green.

-----------------------

-p166

-p166

W I have the impression to be able to distinguish two types of sculptures: eternal or ephemeral…
_ For me the mountain can be like a wave, I call this a landscape, a movement. Earth is alive so it moves, it is constantly developing. When I observe nature I enter an entire different timescape; but, when I work, I do not think about it. When I think about a mountain, I see it growing, I think about lava, the moment lava freezes, the tectonic movements…
Moreover, the perception of objects is relative to the physical presence of the person experiencing the object: I move in space, I walk towards the mountain, the mountain gets closer, it seems bigger.

------------------------

-p167

-p167

W It seems that to you, everything is alive.
_ Everything that exists, that has a shape, is alive and has a spirit: animals, plants, minerals, air; water. Everything that lives will die. Yes, maybe it's a shintoist vision of the world.
X You attack the stone, is it to wake it up ?
_ Yes it is true, I battle with the stone. I put my life in the material.
W How does your spirit and the spirit of the stone cohabit together in the stone ?
- It's natural for me…
X At what point does a sculpture work ?
_ If something emanates from the sculpture, a feeling, a sensation, an expression, a spirit; if the sculpture makes you dream and travel, then it works.

--------------------

-p168

-p168

W Your large scale pieces are motionless and they are designed for a particular context. Do your smaller and mobile pieces require ephemeral scenographies?

_ This piece is mostly for an indoor use. In general it's a question of scale. It is less the shape that the size that matters. I want to play with formal and scale contrasts, they are so many possibilities!
I presented this white work in a white space, a museum with a contemporary architecture, it created a new atmosphere, very soft.
Actually, most of my works are exhibited in urban contexts. I use “natural” shapes and materials, because I like the idea of bringing a “natural” presence in an urban context.

---------------------------

-p170

-p170

X The fact that such a violent technique may produce such a soft shape really impresses me.
_ I see what's waiting for me inside the block, inside the material. It is not an assembly work, collage or clay modelling, It is sculpting: you are taking away matter. I have no anger when I work, I respect, I release the shape, I must not take off too much, I work step by step, I question the shape. "Is this what I want to express ?". I have to known when to stop, when the shape is revealed. Violence does not give birth to a soft shape.
--------------------------

-p171

-p171

X What are the common points between this two sculptures ?
_ They are very different: the white one is an iceberg that floats peacefully, the black one is a young volcanic mountain.

---------------------

-p177

-p177

_Here it looks like a wave but I wanted to suggest a fertilized woman, like a flower, a corolla, protected, delicacy, softness.
_ the colour of a material is very important, for example I love to work with pink on large sculptures in the city to express softness. These days I work a lot with black for small pieces expressing power.

------------------------

-p178

-p178

W This is an unrealised project for the "big swan" stadium in Niigata.
_ It is an undulation, in front of the entrance of the stadium parallel to the canal. It's a sculpture of 3-4 meters high that you cross, the paving becomes the sculpture, the ground rises, undulates into verticality.

-----------------

-p188

-p188

X Is this artwork nai¨ve ?
_ Nai¨ve ? well, when I am asked to explain this piece, I often just say "it is figurative work" and I point to the sea, the waves, rocks, the sun…Nevertheless, I dislike it when my work is categorised in this limited way. In fact, it's much deeper, intense than this. This sculpture is not a collage of symbols, it's a big sculpture encapsulating void.

Let's consider the space of the garden, imagine this entire space as a massive block, with the help of certain sculpting techniques, I take off material, creating a space to live for the public. My sculptures are for a human use, when a man enters the sculpture, he becomes a part of it, he is the actor, the life of the art piece.
In the Japanese spirit, emptiness is a fundamental value, it's obvious in our traditional approach of architecture (cf. 《eulogy of the shadow》 of Tanizaki) or of board games like Go in which the goal is to create void.
This sculpture is the reunion of a symbolic approach of nature and a more conceptual approach to the organisation of space.

X What are your links with zen thought?
_ Both my thought and zen thought search for strength from the inside. However, the zen reach it through emptiness, I tread the pass of fullness. I respect the Zen philosophy, but it is not my way, nor my mode of creation. In a presence of zen, you experience a sense of respect and distance. I want my sculptures to be friendly and attractive, pleasant to touch.

-p190

-p190

X Integrating the idea of void in your artwork reveals how trusting you are of your audience and the intellectual complicity you share with it.
_ I trust the audience, I think my work is very accessible. Void is a part of my sculpture, whether for a discontinuous piece, or a sculpture composed of several elements which seem independent. It is this void which allows man to mentally enter the work of art. The shape of the emptiness must be as beautiful as the shape of the solid parts.
I can give the audience a sense of space, interrupting a continuous movement gives even more power to continuity… If there was any doubt about my purpose doing this piece, the title of it is "feeling of continuity in space".

-p204

-p204

W I studied animation film and when I see such a piece, I cannot help thinking of the keyframes of an animation.
_ Yes, there is a kind of cinematic progression, the eye of the public slides in time and space, he mentally builds transitions in between keyframes and can understand motion in a very smooth and continuous way. I wanted to talk about cultural effervescence; people can come here to collect their thoughts, to recuperate from the overflow of information. People can also come to sit on the sculpture, thus creating a space of socialisation.

----------------------

-p210

-p210

X The users of this area welcomed this piece with a religious ceremony in this sacred environment. What do you think of that? Are you religious?

_ This sculpture is next to a temple, reconciled within nature. "The window of the heart" is not religious, it is spiritual, something to contemplate upon individually. Climb to the sky, step through the disc, reach this state of spirituality.

-------------------------

-p215

-p215

W Stone is a material usually associated with a funerary function.
_ It is true, but it does not bother me. For me is more diverse. Anyway, my sculptures by their expressions can hardly be associated with a funerary function.

W As far as I know, you only made one grave, why accept working for death when you are somebody focusing on life ?
_ I made this work for Michiko, somebody I really respect, a writer, wife of Sakaguchi Ango. It's a house, a lived-in monument which is full of life.

--------------------------

-p217

_ Oui, j’appelle cela l’union.

-p217

W Is your sculpture a call for the respect of nature?
_ Yes, I call this union.

--------------------------

-p218

-p218

W Those two sculptures were presented simultaneously. Is there a link between them ?
_ I made these sculptures carrying a message of peace for this museum in Greece. This sculpture represents broken unity, it also evokes the sea of marble to me. The goal of the sculpture on the right was to represent simultaneously the olive, symbol of Greece, and the hard work of man, through the image of bricks. The ground is hollowed out, in order to bring the audience together and make them feel their belonging to the ground. It is a meeting place to talk about peace.

-------------------------------

-p219

-p219

_ This ephemeral work contains the same idea of a meeting point. For this project I worked with a mime, I wanted to put human and vegetal expressions on the same scene.

----------------------------

-p220

-p220

W What do you represent here?
_ A break, violence, a broken softness. I was so saddened by this war in Irak. I needed to protest.

W Usually you promote peace with peaceful images.
_ Showing war can lead to expressing a will for peace. I consider that artists are normal citizens, we have to bring something to society.

W Must an artist have a political role ?
_ As an artist, I wouldn’t march in the streets or join a political party. My message is in my work. The artist has a moral and philosophical role. By his work he must try and help the thought patterns of society to evolve.

-p224

> Tu as travaille´ pour la me´moire collective.

-p224

W You also worked for collective memory.
_ This is an homage to resistance and deportation.
I represented the two wars, the two blocks, the two victories that drew rivers of blood from both sides, gigantic human sacrifices. The two main vertical grey hard blocks represent the victories and I use the pebbles, so numerous, anonymous, fragile, instable and falling, to represent all the humans sacrificed. The pebbles are fixed at the end of metal sticks to give the impression that they are falling. I thought long about the environment, you can see diagonal lines in the background, I wanted to work in opposition with existing graphism on this topic.
It is very interesting to work with so many variables: the message, the political and historical representations and the spatial context.

------------------------------

-p225

-p225

_ these are researches for the previous project, focusing on gravity, hard material with liquid behaviour.

-p227

-p227

This is a public order that is precisely situated on the 38th Parallel. This is the line that divides the two Koreas as well as the art piece. I wanted to show this border and at the same time link the two blocks with a sphere. I want to symbolize the act of getting over this feud. It represents a dream of peace. This sculpture is a part of the Earth weaving project.

-p227

W The Kyoto agreements, the universal exhibition in Ai¨chi 2005 about the harmony man-nature… Society is changing and public awareness about environmental issues is increasing. What do you think about it?
_ Man wants to dominate nature but he is now starting to understand that nature is a far superior system. It is for us to adapt to this system. We cannot dominate the universe, we are merely a small part of nature, like dust particles in the wind.

W So we come back to the question of interventionism: you say that you respect nature, but you are a sculptor, you work on natural materials with modern technological tools. Are you in search of progress?
_ Humankind is progressing but is it going in the right direction? The word "progress" in our era is mostly meant in a technological and economic sense. I do not agree, I'm looking for philosophic, intellectual and emotional progress.
People of our time consider art and its deep research as a second rate priority and those who choose this artistic path are often left on the margins of society. Of course, in art we do take advantage of technological improvements and it is a very good thing, but we must not forget the main objective and the reason that lead us to do art in the first place. We have “progressed” according to an established scale of values, but maybe it is time for the scale of values to evolve as well. They are many ways of improving the human condition. We have responsibilities which we cannot flee.

-p228

_ This sculpture is installed in front of a school for nurses. The sculpture is named after a well known Japanese tale: "momotaro" (the kid born in a peach). This tale promotes moral values such as the respect of the weak and the elderly, honesty and the importance of friendship

-p231

-p231

W Why such an interest for grounds? Is it an oriental preoccupation?
_ I studied Japanese gardens and refined my personal approach. The ground is the base for the rest of space, I am very interested in it because it is so fundamental. When you modify this element, the effect in the perception of the visitor can be very strong.

--------------------

-p237

-p237

W I have noticed ground works mostly in the beginning of your career, giving me the impression that as time went by, your clients gave you more credit allowing you to move from a work which was lying down to a work which was standing.
_ No I do not think so. There was a real demand for pavement work and only a few artists took an interest in it. It was a personal choice to start working more and more on volume. I am still interested by pavement work, but now my interest lies more in the transition between the ground and the standing volume. I focus more on the transition between horizontal and vertical. Any object can hardly exist without the ground, these are two elements which you cannot dissociate.

-p240

其の頃、私はすでにCESI(エンジニア学校)と、IFAM(建築師学校)の短期講師をしていました。

-p240

W Did you make art piece in collaboration with others?
_ This work was proposed to me by a technical high school, the creative and technical work was done with and by the students. It was a very comprehensive project, I had to do the training, sketch the project, coordinate the creation of it. At the time I was already working at the CESI (engineer school) and at the IFAM (constructing authority).
W Do you claim paternity for this work?
_ No it is a collective work, I feel responsible for setting the framework for the group. It was an interesting experience, but not entirely satisfactory for me from an artistic point of view.
------------------------------

-p241

-p241

_ This sculpture is quite functional, it hides the high school's chimneys. It is also a collaborative piece, I was in charge of the design then we work tohether, the craftwork was mostly done by the students. I prefer this type of collaboration where each person uses his own skills.

-----------------------

-p242

-p242

_ I want to talk about evolution, blossoming, a bar that grows, a character that progresses vertically.

-----------------------

-p244

-p244

W Did you create this hill ?
_ The hill was already there. Its purpose is to block out the noise of the highway. I wanted to sculpt this hill and make it intimate; create a place where students could interact and dialog. The idea was to make a public work, integrating humans by its shear monumental scale. It was new for me to work with raw blocks, an assembly, to do a composition in such a large environment. I quickly realised that, more than success on this kind of work depends on having a clear and strong idea at the outset, rather than on endless work on the blocks.

------------------------

-p247

-p247

W Here you distort the structure. Is this a natural action or can it be qualified as an intervention?
_ I voluntarily create contrasts between geometrical and organic shapes. Harmony can emerge through the static or dynamic association of the two types of shapes. The sculpture makes the space around it breath.

---------------------------

-p248

-p248

W Being a sculptor is a very physical and tiring occupation. Where does your energy come from to carve the stone?
_In a difficult work you get satisfaction when the work is done, it is like climbing a mountain.
Hitting the granite is hard, but I am looking for the harmony with the material so I don’t suffer from the activity, any work is hard anyway. I love this hard material that resists. When I sculpt wood for instance, I hit and penetrate the material effortlessly, there is no real dialogue. Now sculpting stone is what I do, it is not just an occupation, it is a need.

-----------------
-p252

-p252

_ I wanted to make a sculpture that one could appreciate, even without water. There are two basins, and the water flows on a staircase. As a sculptor I am interested in creating a sculpture that changes. I consider that I can sculpt water because I can sculpt what it flows on, the stone face. I chose the pink granite "rose de la clarte´" because it is a fountain situated in a garden, and the contrast of green and pink works well.
----------------------

-p256

-p256

_ Here we have quite a similar context but the work is very different, why?
_ I wanted to make something welcoming, a place where the kids would play and an art piece that adults could easily integrate in their environment. I mixed grey granite from the Tarn and some pink "de la clarte´", which blends in the sculpture in its context by reference to a typical architectural pattern of Sainte Menehould : diagonal lines of brick and "gaize" (lime stone).
-------------------

-p258

-p258

- Here I also used raw materials. I wanted to play with the architecture of the location, create a harmony with the surroundings, make the sculpture follow the inclination of the roof. It is a dry fountain, a meeting place, to welcome people, a place of exchange and communion.
--------------------

-p264

-p264

_ This is a sculpture to which I gave two names and two significations: "signal" et "haniwa", from a French point of view, it mostly has a signaletic function. In Japanese, though, "haniwa" is a funerary object that existed before 2000 BC, a stele, an object close to the heart of noble people.

-----------------------

-p268

-p268

W This sculpture is a 80 m2 mineral garden, a signaletic sculpture landscape composed of pavement, pebbles and sculptures.
There is a superposition of three granite blocks that form a five meters high column: In Japan, it is impossible to build such a tall and heavy sculpture because of earthquakes.

-p273

_ This private order marks the entrance of an allotment, to give a more affirmed identity to the place.
W You mean you gave your personal artistic identity?
_ Not really, the architecture already had an identity but this work gives the allotment something others do not have.

-p278

-p278

_ Those sculptures express a political commitment.
Left : In Germany "la main de bouddha" (the “hand of bouddha”). I arrived from Japan in a Germany divided by a wall. I wanted to send a message of peace through a religious character, a universal and serene message of wisdom.
Right: In Spain "la mano de la Paz" (the “hand of peace”), a closed hand, a fist banging down on the table, I was angry against Franco. Another way to talk about peace.

-p280

-p280

W More hands?
_ No, these are pregnant bellies. It is actually part of the building, melded into the concrete. The work is in the waiting room of a hospital, I wanted to represent protection of children, the egg.

----------------------

-p282

-p282

_ Here it is more like an armour, the polished parts being inside.
_ These are hands protecting what is incubating inside. The polished part is outside, usually what is polished is felt as more fragile, sensitive.

--------------------

-p283

-p283

_ Like a hand taking a tool, sending back to a time when man started using tools.

_ This is a protected earth, like an egg. It's a fragile and defensive sculpture.

----------------------

-p284

-p284

_ This sculpture is inside a retirement home.
W I think I recognize hands traces on the smaller elements?
_ These result from fingers pressed on the stone. The hand can have numerous significations, power, strength, softness, friendship, commitment, sharing … Elderly people need a hand as a guide and support in the twilight of their life. This is a sentimental sculpture.

-p287

_ This is a command for a gymnasium in Tokyo that wanted to signal itself. I wanted to talk about strength, movement, show man’s energy. The shape, the colour, the material: all these elements create the feeling of seeing a muscle. It is a very simple answer and in my point of view, it is a success., The space was tiny, it was a challenge.
A ring puts the sculpture in the continuity of the global Earth weaving idea.

---------------------

-p289

-p289

_ Wood is a very docile material which allows you to obtain very refined structures and lines. I worked the surface of the wood, creating a rough and tense feel, using traces of gouge. The first impression is that of a muscle, but it isn’t one. These are roots, an image of vegetal tension. When you observe you can see that the energy is not the same, the idea different. In fact, the two ideas are quite the opposite: in a muscle there is an inward force, here the force is outward.
I often hesitate when I have to name a sculpture. You know, it may not be necessary that I explain so much, maybe some of the value of the sculpture is in the mystery, in the fact that its meaning can be found and change according to the interpretation of each person, different intimacies creating different meanings. This is why the value of my explanations is very limited, and could even be forgotten.

_ I am a sculptor, not a writer, and what I have to say is in the shape, my liberty ends once the shape is created, the liberty of the audience starts with that shape and it may lead it as far as its imagination will allow. I do not wish my explanations to interfere with each person’s perception of the sculpture. My work touches people’s soul in different ways, and this is a good thing.

------------------------

-p290

-p290

W Is this a commercial art piece ?
_ No it is symbolic and narrative sculpture, I wanted to represent natural clouds, the earth, flames in my own poetic language. It is for the Kawazaki corporation that distributes petrol, I try to adapt to the concerns of my partners. Making a sculpture for a client is very delicate, you must adapt to a context and respect the budget constraints; find a balance between the client’s wishes and your own desires.

-p293

_ This is a public order for the botanic garden of Niigata, I wanted to celebrate the earth’s power, re-create the four seasons in a meeting place with an egg coming out from earth in the centre. In this area where the four seasons are really different and recognizable, people can feel the cycles of time. This sculpture is one hundred tons, the visitor’s body is inside the sculpture, he can climb, touch, feel the power. I am glad to have had such an order, so close to my personal interests.

-p300

_ This sculpture is the result of the meeting with Mr Tamada, who introduced me to Mr Nakanoya who let me do this sculpture. With the confidence acquired doing this sculpture I was able to do the dam work in Tazawako. Each one of my sculptures is the result of human encounter, men and women who trusted me and allowed me to progress and to nurture my art. I have so many people to thank!

------------------------------

-p305

-p305

W Is your vocabulary personal or universal?
My works used to be mostly intuitive, I wanted to evoke feelings, the understanding was direct, diverse.
Some of the sculptures are explicit, but sometimes my ideas need clarifying. The Earth weaving is shaped and understandable by its philosophical content. Maybe I should explain myself on that…

W Yes, what is the Earth weaving project?
_ The shape of the stitch penetrates the earth, comes out somewhere else and, with a bit of imagination the globality of the sculptures that are formally related to this same shape pattern, constitute one planetary sculpture. Through my sculpture I wish to create a bond between people, a bond of peace, friendship, fraternity that can unify nations. This is my message.

W Liberty, equality, fraternity… You really like France!
_ Yes, it's for these ideals that I remain here (laughs).
More than thirty years ago, I travelled to Europe and I landed in France. It could have been somewhere else, but it was France that welcomed me, I felt comfortable here. I started working here and I wanted to go all the way creating a life here. But I do not feel tied down to France, I feel free to create wherever I want to. My artistic language can be understood everywhere.

-p312

-p312

W Before you started work on the dam, you did a series of sculptures through subcontracting.

_ It was a way to meet my future partners, GEM granite in Madras, India. I wanted to try and I was obliged to subcontract. I had some very good surprises and the work was unquestionably of a great quality, but from the point of view of sensibility, I was not entirely satisfied. I would have needed to follow the making of the sculptures day after day. I prefer to work in my studio, being able to control the process, being very close to the sculpture, but you need to respect the deadlines, and when time is of the essence, there is sometimes no other choice.

-----------------------

-p320

-p320

W How does on start on such an ambitious project?
_ First a visit of the site to get a feel for the atmosphere, to get in touch with your future partners, to evaluate the technical constraints, understand the situation and what is at stake, basically to gauge the range of possibilities, the potential of the project. The site is near Akita, 500 kilometres to the north-east of Tokyo, next to the deepest lake in Japan, in the national reserve of Komagatake. The dam is the first realisation of the national ecological project launched in 1992. This dam protects the populations of the Valley from the mudslides of the Komagatake volcano, which is still active. I want my sculpture to be at the same time symbolic and functional. In the national parc, I have to integrate the piece in an almost perfect environment. My ambition was to create a quiet place where man and nature dialogue and are complementary.

W How does the project develop from there?
_ There is a very long period of research, a lot of them, for such a huge project, a lot of partners to convince collectively and individually, to make everybody work together. Working method: sketches, drawings, models and feasibility studies: fixation weights, resistance of material, so much at stake, so many dangers. There is absolutely no room for error.

--------------------

-p331

-p331

W You are a creative person and you are also an executor, a workman
I need both aspects, meditation and creation but also to lay my hands on the material. To feel complete, I need both the intellectual and the physical work.

--------------------

-p ?

> L’oeuvre finie ?

-p ?

W The finished work ?
_ The ornamented dam is 120 meters wide, 16 meters high, which amounts to 250 tons of sculpted granite. The bas-relief represents the waves, rocks and the sun. I dialog with the water with "Kawa", a sculpture on the left-hand side that points to the river. On the right there is the “banc de l’amitie´” (the “bench of friendship”), a sculpture for the community, where people can come and sit. At the entrance of the cultural parc of Tazawako I made a signaletic piece, which can be seen and read from the road. It invites you to discover this beautiful place gradually.

----------------------

> Ton bilan ?

W How would you sum up this experience?
_ It is a challenge I never expected I would face, but it was a great collective success. This project had very positive constraints, notably an aquatic path for fish, walking paths for visitors, the prohibition to use polluting or visually aggressive materials.
This sculpture is part of the Earth weaving project but this time, frontiers were crossed in the making of the sculpture itself: the dam is in Japan, a part of is was made in India, an other part in Brittany, parts of it have crossed oceans unifying populations in this idea of a human culture with common values.

-----------------------

-p344

>Tu as gagne´ en sagesse ?

-p344

W Usually, your sculptures are made of nearly eternal materials, nevertheless you also made ephemeral installations. What is the difference for you?
_ It is very important to experiment in order to evolve, sometimes just for my sake, sometimes in a public setting. For me the ephemeral and the lasting have the same value. These sculptures are researches, sketches, ephemeral installations of which I will probably only keep a photo or a memory. In my life those sculptures are very important.

W Yet a few years back you confessed to me your satisfaction about the fact that your stone sculptures would last for nearly for an eternity, carrying your message over centuries.
_ Now I think that anything that has a shape will disappear.
W Have you gotten wiser with time?
_ Yes, probably because recently I had the opportunity to think about this through the practice of ephemeral sculptures and particularly land-art.

-p354
W This is a cast, why have you destroyed the work ?
_ It was taking up too much space, I cannot keep everything, I didn’t feel as close to it, maybe because of the material: plaster. I have also thrown away some sculptures because they were blocking my evolution. Other sculptures I have dismantled and reused in new sculptures. I don’t necessarily have a logical explanation, it’s just part of the creative process.

-p360
W At the beginning of the interview, you told me that man (including the artist) should have a more humble attitude towards nature. Paradoxically you seem to go for bigger and bigger sculptures, land art, in which humans get lost.
_ I am not megalomaniac. I do not ignore man as the scale of my work expands. I want to demonstrate the power of nature, and the scale helps doing that. Nature is much more important than humans, nature is the condition of our existence, without us the planet would still go on spinning. When you watch my land art realisations from the sky you can really get a feel for its size, and on the ground you are not overwhelmed by it. As you walk through them, you experience a very strong contact with vegetals, you are immersed and in contact with materials like in my other immersive sculptures.

-p362

_ Oui, appelle ca 《 jardin 》 si tu pre´fe`res.

-p362

W So why do you call this "sculpture" instead of "garden"?
_ Yes, call it "garden" if you feel better with this word. I consider the planet as a global art piece, I see architecture as a bas-relief, natural landscapes as surface works on earth. Now let's add the idea of time, the lively aspect, in motion, the seasons and their colours, like a bas-relief, painted and alive.
Maybe I am influenced by Japanese and French gardens. In a Japanese garden, man tries to copy existing nature in a very controlled way. In a French garden, man dominates nature and imposes his own design. I want to show shapes and the natural materials are my means of expression. Nature used to be the subject, now it is the media to express myself.

-p368
W − In your second land art experimentation, you reproduce a map of Europe and of the Beauce, the area where you work. The creativity of the artist seems only in the background, taking second place to cartographic considerations.
_ It was a request from my partners, other actors of the Beauce fields. We were serving a political cause, celebrating a 25-member Europe. The content is political, I was a kind of designer on this project, doing scenography rather than fine-art. I did put sculptures inside the land art, as warmer and more poetical presences.

-p370

W You create more fleeting and larger artworks, what does it reveal ?
_ I want to enjoy myself, I do not want to waist my time for things which don’t please me. All scales, all techniques are welcome.

-p371

-p371

W- When you talk about landscapes, you seem to include tiny objects, as well as real, big landscapes.
_ Initially, there is no difference; I always start from an idea, a dream, a travel through shapes, and feelings. I feel the landscape in many of my sculptures regardless of their scales. When the sculpture does not “invade” the space of the audience, I hope the audience can project itself inside the sculpture whichever its size.

--------------------

-p392

>Es-tu un sculpteur de la vie ?
_La vie existe.

-p392

W Are you a sculptor of life?
_ Life exists. When I work with live materials I give birth to an art piece, which will then take on a life of its own with the audience. During my life, I tried to create life.
W Is your sculpture primitive?
_ Since man has roamed the earth, he has been faced with the same vital preoccupations. I try to adapt to today’s society, while trying to stand back and observe it.
W Do you consider the thematics you work on as being the most important?
_ I wouldn’t dare affirm my priorities as absolute, I am just a man, seeing things at my level. I am happy to often be my own client, so that I can take the time to answer these interrogations, with the state of mind of a researcher.

-p343

-p343

W Is the egg a religious symbol?
_ No it is a universal symbol!
W Does the egg emerge from chaos?
_ No, the egg is birth, the egg can be a starting point that can change to become a sphere, distort itself, transform, be. For me, all shapes have the dot as an origin. It symbolises interiority, strength.
The egg is one of my favourite shapes, because you will never find two identical eggs.
The egg is a starting point, but at the same time it is round, representing a cycle.
When I do an egg, it is a symbol of necessary self-doubt, of maturity and renewal, a new beginning.
